根据温哥华市的“树木法”，不论该棵树是种在前院或后院，只要直径超过20厘米(8吋) ，离地面超过1.4米(四呎半)，就需要获市府批准才可以动工砍掉。烈治文略微有些不同，但是，基本上也都是直径要20厘米以上，高度1米4左右需市府批准才可砍。这项“树木法”，规定砍树事前要申请，否则属刑事罪行，如果擅自砍伐树木，最高罚款是10万元。

如果真的要砍树，要先量度树干的直径，看看是否需要申请许可证。

确定要获得政府批准才能动工的话，便先填写一份表格【Applicantion to Injure or Destory Trees】， 然后缴交所需费用和证明文件。另外要提交一份“树木师报告”，可以经黄页和互联网找到本地专业的树艺专家编写报告。现在树艺专家必须是由International Society of Arboricuture (I.S.A.)或American Society of Consulting Arborists (A.S.C.A)认可。这个程序是必要的，而且有助当局加快审批时间。

危险死亡树木需要专业人员出具报告， 再申请政府许可。
